Australian Jockey Zac Purton has claimed a three-peat of Hong Kong Jockey championship titles, beating out star counterpart Joao Moreira for the coveted title.
The Australian and Brazilian had gone toe-to-toe all season before Purton saluted on Sunday evening local time.
Heading into the penultimate meeting of the season at Sha Tin, Purton was essentially assured of the title with an eight-win buffer on his rival, despite a slight mathematical chance that Moreira could upstage him at the popular Hong Kong track.
However in the Sha Tin Mile, Purton chalked up win 144 for the season on the David Hall-trained Fast Most Furious and clinched the title, putting it out of reach from Moreira.
It is Purton’s fourth Hong Kong Jockey’s Championship crown, with his first coming in the 2013-14 season which brought an end to Douglas White’s string of 13-consecutive titles.
The battle between Purton and Moreira has been longstanding, the two having won the past seven Hong Kong jockeys’ premierships between them.
Moreira claimed three premierships in a row from 2014-15 to 2016-17 however Purton has now claimed the last three season titles.
Purton’s double on Suday night brought his campaign to a total of 145 winners for the season while Moreira’s treble saw him finish second on 138 while the ‘Mauritian Magician’ Karis Teetan finished third on 90 wins.
