Welcome to our runner-by-runner preview of the 2021 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.
1 – BROOME
Barrier: 2 Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: W M Lordan
Trip winner with just 1 win at this level, across the channel at Saint-Cloud. Has plenty of scope for improvement. Has had a spectacular 2021 with 4 wins and 2 runner up finishes in 6 races including one of each over this trip. Cannot be ruled out entirely but is squaring up against some serious heavyweights.
2 – MISHRIFF
Barrier: 5 Trainer: J & T Gosden Jockey: David Egan
Trip winner who was last seen 3rd of 4 in the Eclipse at Sandown. Not disgraced but not a true piece of Group 1 form for this purpose. Better judged by neck win in Dubai Classic at this level on penultimate start. Fairly unexposed colt who should have a lot more to come. Works well with David Egan and should be right amongst it if bringing his best. Good bet.
3 – LOVE
Barrier: 6 Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore
The one they seemingly all have to beat. Has won here in her sole appearance over 10f when last seen taking out the Prince of Wales’ Stakes at Royal Ascot. 2 from 2 over this trip, both wins at this level in the Yorkshire Oaks and the Epsom Oaks. A phenomenal filly and the spearhead of Aidan O’Brien’s push to regain this title after the dominant run of Enable saw the Gosden team take this 3 of the last 4 iterations. She’s being backed into near odds-on but for good reason.
4 – WONDERFUL TONIGHT
Barrier: 3 Trainer: D Menuisier Jockey: Oisin Murphy
Immediately catches the eye as a 2 time C&D winner from 2 outings at Group 1 and 2 levels. Oisin Murphy in the irons for the first time is interesting and while she’s a player on form she has a bit to find on the heavyweights. Strong each-way appeal for an in-form French yard.
5 – ADAYAR
Barrier: 4 Trainer: Charlie Appleby Jockey: William Buick
The sole Appleby standard bearer but quite a powerful one at that. Lightly raced this Godolphin colt was last seen taking out the Epsom Derby over this trip at 16/1 and has entered many pocketbooks. You know you have a good horse when they earn the black type in the derby. Has a lot of pressure to back it up and should step up to the plate with William Buick a reliable ride and the partnership is proven albeit not at this level. Even if you don’t back him keep an eye on him as he is likely to have a lot more to come.
6 – LONE EAGLE
Barrier: 1 Trainer: M Meade Jockey: Frankie Dettori
Really caught the eye when beaten by a neck in the Irish Derby over this trip. Hasn’t been tried at this level otherwise but that was form enough to send him into this in earnest. Best piece of winning form is the Group 3 Zetland at Newmarket. This is a tough task but the strong finish on the Curragh and the steady hand of the mighty Frankie Dettori makes him a player. As always you must respect any creature underneath Frankie!
